Phoebe Rotter: Archives, Menu, Darling
April 2024
Phoebe Rotter (she/they) is an interdisciplinary artist from upstate New York. Her work investigates nostalgia and body politics through drawings and installation.
In Phoebe’s words: “I’m fascinated by movement, whether it’s portrayed or implied. An empty chair, a tilted lid, a dog-eared recipe: each image evokes humanity and touch. As I sift through my beloved grandmother Lorraine’s archives– recipes, letters, photos, stacks of table linens– her presence echoes through the room. It’s not ghostly or even nostalgic, but a small glow emanates through each object. I remember her hands vividly; with my own hands, I attempt to remember her to others.”
